Lamisil is issued in forms of tablets and cream. Both are used for concrete purpose.
Terbinafine Tablets are used for treatment of the listed below:
- Fungal infections of the toe,
- fingernail, caused by the fungus,
- tinea unguium.
Cream is used for treatment of fungal infections of the skin, including tinea pedis ("athlete's foot"), tinea corporis, and tinea cruris ("jock itch").
The usual dose of Lamisil tablets is 250 mg once a day. It is usually prescribed for 6 weeks for the treatment of fingernails, and for 12 weeks in order for the treatment of toenails.
There is another scheme of using Terbinafine: it may be given as two tablets by 500 mg once daily for one week (7 days) during the first week of each month for 3 months for toenail infections.
For children under 20kg (44 pounds), a dose of Lamisil tablets is usually 62.5 mg/day, and for children between 20 and 40kg (44 and 88 pounds) a dose of 125 mg/day is recommended.
Take Lamisil with or without food this doesn’t matter.
Lamisil destroys fungal cells by weakening the cell membranes, this disables their activity in your body and your condition is getting better. Oral Lamisil was approved by the FDA in 1993. Terbinafine oral tablets were approved in 1996.
If you miss a dose of Terbinafine, take it as soon as possible. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of Lamisil at once.
Store Terbinafine at room temperature at about 25 degrees C away from heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom and in the kitchen.
Lamisil Safety information
Do not take Lamisil if you are allergic to it or to any of its components. If you have any other allergies tell your doctor about this. Take Lamisil with caution and after advice of your pharmacist if you had:
- immune system problems,
- kidney disease, liver disease, lupus erythematosus,
- you are pregnant,
- you are breastfeeding – you may use it but after consultation with a doctor.
Do not take alcohol beverages or limit their quantity. Do not alcohol every day because this may increase probability of side effects.
Do not give this medicine to other people unless it was prescribed to them.
Lamisil Side effects
Usually there are no side effects, however there are common side effects, that may occur:
- Diarrhea,
- temporary change or loss of taste,
- stomach upset,
- tiredness.
Very rarely there can be such side effects as:
- new signs of infection (like fever, chills, persistent sore throat),
- easy bruising/bleeding,
- vision changes,
- liver disease.
An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
