Parlodel is used to lower prolactin levels. Hormone Prolactin is important for producing breast milk and for normal fertility for women.
Bromocriptine can be used to treat such disorders caused by high prolactin levels as amenorrhea (lack of a menstrual period), infertility, persistent breast milk production, and other conditions associated with high prolactin levels caused by prolactin-secreting tumors for women and men.
Parlodel is effective as well for treatment of Parkinson's disease, which caused by low levels of dopamine in the brain. Effects produced by Parlodel are similar to those of dopamine, therefore it is effective in the treatment of the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control associated with Parkinson's disease.
Before using Parlodel consult your doctor. For exact dosing instructions check the label on the medicine.
- Take Parlodel orally before or after food.
- You may mark on a calendar which days you should take Parlodel.
Parlodel helps to increment level of dopamine. It blocks the release of prolactin from the pituitary gland and lowering growth hormone levels (in patients with acromegaly). In Parkinson disease, Parlodel stimulates dopamine receptors in certain parts of the brain.
Try to take Parlodel as soon as possible if you miss your regular time. But in case if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. You shouldn't take 2 doses at once.
The best temperature for storage of Bromocriptine is 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). You can keep it between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for short time. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Be sure that Parlodel is inaccessible for children and pets.
Parlodel is to be prescribed by doctor and used only by the patient. Do not give it to other people.
Parlodel Safety information
Abstain from using Parlodel if:
- you have allergic reaction to any ingredient in Parlodel or to ergot alkaloids;
- you are breast-feeding;
- you have blood poisoning during pregnancy;
- you have recently given birth and have coronary artery disease (chest pain) or other severe heart disease;
- your high blood pressure can't be controlled or you have developed high blood pressure associated with pregnancy;
- you are taking Bromocriptine only for hyperprolactinemia and become pregnant.
If any of these apply to you tell your doctor or nurse immediately.
Keep in mind:
- Before driving or performing other possibly unsafe tasks make sure you know how you react to it.
- Using of Parlodel may reduce the effectiveness of your birth control pill. Be sure to use an additional form of birth control for prevention pregnancy, (eg, condoms) while using Parlodel.
- If you want to stop taking Parlodel check first with your doctor.
- In case of a brain tumor, sudden stopping Parlodel can lead to rapid regrowth of the tumor. Always talk with your doctor before you stop taking.
- Extreme caution is indispensable in children younger than 15 years of age. In this age group safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed;
- All lab tests, including blood pressure, liver and kidney function, heart function, and blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress. Do not miss any doctor and lab appointments.
- During reproductive cycle, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Parlodel. It is unknown if Parlodel is excreted in breast milk. If you take Parlodel do not breast-feed.
Parlodel Side effects
If any of these side effects of Parlodel persist or become bothersome consult with your doctor:
cold sensitivity in fingers and toes; diarrhea;constipation; dizziness; dry mouth; drowsiness; fatigue; headache; indigestion; loss of appetite; lighth-headedness; stomach cramps nausea;; stuffy nose; vomiting.
Necessarily ask medical attention as soon as any of these severe side effects of Parlodel occur:
sudden confusion; sudden daytime sleepiness; severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal involuntary movements; bloody or black, tarry stools; watery nasal discharge; chest pain; shortness of breath; depression; fainting; hallucinations; one-sided weakness; persistent, progressive, severe headache; ringing in the ears; seizures; slurred speech or trouble speaking; stomach pain;; sudden loss of coordination; vision changes; vomiting blood or a substance like coffee grounds.
