I will be seeing my Dr. about a perscrip. for Wellbutrin to aid me in stop smoking. I am wanting to know recommended dosage and how to take it before getting a prescription. I used it one other time many years ago and seems like to start out with I took more and then as I tapered off cig. took less wellbutrin. It worked for me then but would like to use the same as before. Thank you
Roberta, the dose is prescribed individually, depending on how often you smoke, for how long have you been smoking and how addicted you are to smoking. Often patients are told to take larger amounts at once, and smaller amounts at the end of treatment. You should know that this medication can't be stopped abruptly. I have heard that Wellbutrin will help stop the cravings for nicotine. Due to my medical condition of diabetes & high cholesterol, I know I need to stop smoking. My doctor refuses to put me on Chantix. I am allergic to the nicotine patches. I tried patches in Feb. '08 & I had an allergic reaction. It wasn't the latex (sticky) part of the patch, but the nicotine part. My doctor has prescribed Wellbutrin SR for me. How long does it usually take for the cravings to stop? What are the effects if I still smoke until the cravings are gone? Any answers you can give me are greatly appreciated.

it is right decision in your case to take Wellbutrin SR to stop smoking. Carvings usually stop in 2-3 weeks, but this is individually. You should take Wellbutrin SR for as long as your doctor prescribed you. You should not smoke during treatment. The habit not to smoke is usually worked out in three weeks.
