Neurontin (Gabapentin) is an effective solution for treating seizure disorders and herpes zoster (e.g. shingles).
This is an oral medicine, e.g. it should be taken by mouth with or without food. Take Gabapentin directly as it was prescribed by your doctor or as written on the package. But better is to follow your doctor’s instructions because the dose is chosen depending on your individual health conditions and response to theraphy.
Usually doctor begins to increase doses gradually beginning from the first day of treatment, giving the first doses near the bedtime, then giving the doses at the same time each day and then keeping the amount of Gabapentin medicine in your body at constant level.
For best effect of Neurontin, do not increase or decrease your doses, do not miss the dose. If you missed adose of Neurontin, take it as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for the next Gabapentin ose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Your dose must be gradually decreased to the finish of treatment.
Store Gabapentin (Neurontin) at room temperature of about 25 degrees C. Store away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Neurontin away from children and pets.
Neurontin Safety information
Take Neurontin(Gabapentin) with caution only when clearly needed if:
- you are allergic to it or to any ingredients of Gabapentin;
- you have any other allergies;
- you have kidney disease;
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Neurontin was found in breast milk.
Do not drink alcohol while you take this medicine. Do not perform any possible unsafe activity like driving if you do not know your reaction to this medicine.
Neurontin Side effects
The most possible side effect that may occur are:
- dry mouth,
- vision changes,
- weight gain,
If any of the listed above side effects occurred, do not stop taking Neurontin, but notify your doctor or nurse immediately.
Seek immediate medical care (call emergency) if you experienced following serious side effects:
- unusual bleeding/bruising,
- tremor or shaking,
- stomach or abdominal pain,
- mental or mood changes,
- loss of coordination,
- chest pain,
- hearing loss,
- swollen arms or legs,
- persistent sore throat, fever with or without cough,
- pain/redness of arms or legs,
- trouble breathing,
- fast, slow or irregular heartbeat.
However the serious side effects are unlikely.
