Twins carry a greater risk of complications
The contrary is being proved by modern scientists. The experts of New York's Center for Human Reproduction, say that the risks had been over-estimated.
People wanting two babies at once should know that one twin pregnancy is not riskier than two single pregnancies, especially if one of them goes after another. However most of the doctors don't think so. They said twin pregnancies carried significant risks to both mother and child.
At the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Barcelona experts said: \"In our opinion patients are being misled and put to unnecessary expense. Moreover, achieving a second pregnancy may also take more than one attempt.\"
The current national average of twin pregnancies in UK is 24%, but the UK fertility regulator, is now trying to make clinics cut their rate of multiple pregnancies to about 10% by the end of 2012.
To do this, they will need to raise the quantity of cases where women have only one embryo transferred in a process called single embryo transfer (SET).
It was definitely shown that IVF pregnancies are 40% safer than natural twin pregnancies. We agree that this should be taken into account.
