Statins are currently the world's top-selling medicines. It has not only perfect cardiovascular effects, but also some unexpected benefits, such as lowering the risk of death from pneumonia or infection and the effects of smoking.

There was no research of the reason of these benefits, but scientists suspect this may be because this medicine affects the inflammation all around the body.

The heart attack preventive effect of statins can be explained in the following way: it lowers levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol which can clog up arteries and cause heart attacks. And though low-density lipoprotein has never been evidently shown to be related to stroke, now we can say it is so, because already in many studies statins have been shown to lower stroke risk.
