Performance Enhancement by Steroids and Side Effects
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are medications derived from the male hormone called testosterone. The term anabolic refers to the property of these medications to build muscles, and androgenic refers to the drugs that are able to enhance male sexual characteristics, for example hair growth or deepening of the voice. Summarizing, steroids helps to grow muscle mass, increase strength, and improve overall athletic performance.
Steroids however can cause serious side effects for men's health. The most often experienced side effects are acne, increased body hair, increased sex drive, and such adverse effect as aggressive behavior. Also steroids can cause temporary infertility, but this is characterized to high doses of steroids. More often adverse effects of steroids are unfavorable changes in blood lipids which have the potential to damage the heart and blood vessels. High dose steroids usually cause liver problems or cendon rupture and gynecomastia (enlargement of the male breasts) may occur.
Other effects have steroids on women's health. Females who use steroids may become bald, or experience deepening of the voice, or enlargement of the clitoris. All of these side effects may stay permanent.
It is important to know, that steroid users are in the group of increased risk for heart attacks and suicide. There have been many reports of a variety of other serious health problems associated with steroid abuse, but for many of these problems, it is difficult to know whether steroids are the direct cause.
