Older Men should beware Disturbed Rest
University of Minnesota made a research in which it appears that disrupted rest and activity rhythms are linked with increasing of mortality rates among older men.
\"Severely disturbed sleep patterns may have a detrimental impact on health in older men\", says Misti Paudel, M.P.H., a member of the School of Public Health.
He, and a group of scientists made an investigation of group of about 3,000 men older than 67 to determine how their rhythm of the day influenced on their health. It appeared that regular routine of waking, going to sleep and good night sleep is very important to maintain good general health and waking early, staying up late may become a reason of stroke and heart attacks in the future.
Activity and biological rhythms of mentioned above patients were tested with a special wrist device called an actigraph, which tracked their movements 24 hour during two years. As a result of this experiment we may conclude that those who rose up earliest or laid down the latest had much greater risk of death (namely they died) that average men in this group.
This is the first study to report strong associations between disturbed rest and activity rhythms and mortality rates in older men.
Paudel will present the results of this study during the Associated Professional Sleep Societies Conference in Baltimore.
