Humans suffer from bird flu in Egypt again

Egypt is attacked by the epidemics of bird flu again, officials reported.

Egypt is the worst hit country outside of Asia because of bird flu. The virus first appeared in Egypt in February 2006. Recently 22 human are ill and two died because of this disease.

This current outbreak happened after six-month silence. As it was reported by Egypt healthcare system, last December 49th case of the disease among humans in Cairo suburb of Matareya occurred.

On the second of April 30 year old woman, Wala Ahmed Abdel Galil, became ill; by her work she had been in contact with sick birds before she was stricken. The worst is that she apparently did not respond to the anti-viral treatment with medication Tamiflu.

This women’s death is the second one. The first case of Egyptian to have died last month happened on the fifth of April. Then a 19-year-old male died from the H5N1 virus after handling sick and dead birds.

Most outbreaks since 2003 have been reported in African and Asian countries. According to the World Health Organisation more than 230 people worldwide have died from bird flu since then.

H5N1 virus has spread across from East Asia has hit Egypt especially hard because the country lies in the path of migrating birds. That is why it is not advised to travel to Egypt in the period of most active bird’s migration. As a rule the virus is less active in summer.
