HIV/AIDS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
According to the Conference Board study concerning the changes in attitude of big corporations to HIV/AIDS needs of their employees, published recently, the current state of company programs around the world has improved. The report examines trends, benefits and best practices of the companies.
Some key findings:
• Around 90 percent of surveyed companies plan to maintain or even increase their spending on HIV/AIDS in nearest terms. The leading spending are among firms with operations in sub-Saharan Africa region.
• According to the study, 3.9 and 2.3 percent of all HIV cases, respectively, are distributed between North America and Western or Central Europe. The flat rates of new infections are expected between 2007 and 2011 years.
• Social responsibility was indicated one of the most important non-financial matter for development and investing in HIV/AIDS related programs, regardless of location. Welfare of employees living with HIV/AIDS is not only question of finance of company, it is social responsibility of every member of society.
• Over 75% of firms report some kind of gain from their HIV programs. The most interesting of them include increased awareness of the risk factors associated with HIV/AIDS ans such psychological factors as decreased fears of becoming infected, increased worker morale, decreased absenteeism and discrimination of HIV infected.
