Health summit: to prevent or to treat?

Held first time National Prevention Summit went on in Melbourne, Australia.

The Prevention Summit aimed to determine which kind of a healthcare system is more capable to deal illnesses that theoretically can be prevented with healthy way of life. The list of such illnesses include diabetes, lung and heart diseases, different cancers and mental illness.

To emphasize the need for investment in preventative health, government reported that estimated cost of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug use is about $56-billion a year. By the way, tobacco control measures, have reportedly already saved the health system about $500 million a year.

The deaths caused by preventable illnesses are expected to reach 1.5 million in the next 15 years, that’s why it is so important to promote preventive healthcare.

The speakers in the summit were:

• National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations chairman Dr. Mick Adams

• The federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon

• Victorian Health Minister Daniel Andrews

• National Heart Foundation chief executive Dr. Lyn Roberts.

These experts report that most deaths in Australia are caused by chronic diseases, and preventing them would lead to enormous savings in government expenditure.
