Coffee decreases fertility
Dutch researchers suggested that more than four cups of coffee a day cut woman's chances of conceiving by around 25%. Nine thousands women took part in the survey. They were tested on ability to become pregnant naturally. The researchers used questionnaires to analyze how lifestyle factors influenced on woman's chances of pregnancy.
About one in seventh appeared to be able to conceive. They found 16% of the women went on to conceive naturally, 45% within six months of their last IVF treatment.
The chances of becoming pregnant were reduce by such factors: excessive weight, smoking of more than one cigarette a day, taking more alcohol than three times a week and drinking coffee.
Drinking alcohol carried the same risk of infertility as excessive caffeine intake. But smoking more than one cigarette a day and being overweight reduced the chances of pregnancy even more.
The researchers estimated that a 36-year-old woman, who smoked, drank too much coffee and alcohol and was overweight, and who had been through three cycles of IVF, would have a 5% chance of a natural pregnancy.
However a lot of women who have up to 20 cups of coffee a day get pregnant easily. But if you already have problems with fertility, these facts are worse thinking about, dr. Bea Linsten said.
