Ceftobiprole shows effectiveness in treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)

Recently, in the International Conference of the American Thoracic Society, the representatives of Basilea Pharmaceutica made a presentation of the results of the third phase of tests of ceftobiprole in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) that requires hospitalization. Previous the results have shown high cure rates among patients with high risk of bad outcome.

Community-acquired pneumonia is a severe disease with large mortality rates and very often it requires hospitalization. Though there are many means to fight microbes, this disease is a cause of many deaths, even in developed countries. The main pathogen in this case is Streptococcus pneumonia.

The detailed statistical analysis of action of ceftobiprole shows that even higher cure rates were achieved in such group of patients:

- elderly patients

- patients with severe pneumonia

- patients with systemic inflammatory response or with concomitant bloodstream infection.

All these patients refer to group of risk. Ceftobiprole was effective in 93% of the clinically evaluable patients of age older than 75 comparing to 86% during treatment with other medication. The patients with class IV and V severity (PORT score) have responded (respectively) 90% cure rate if they were treated with ceftobiprole and 85% other medications from lung disease. Patients with systemic inflammation were cured in 85% of cases.
