A guide on blood pressure medication types
There are many medications to treat blood pressure available. Not everyone takes the same blood pressure medication, and many people take more than one kind. We've developed a small and clear guide which may help to make a correct choice for you personally.
The class of medications called ARBs helps to keep the blood vessels open and relaxed. This leads to blood pressure lowering. As well as ACE inhibitors, ARBs protect your kidneys from different problems.
ACE inhibitors are medications that also lower blood pressure by keeping your blood vessels relaxed. They prevent narrowing your blood vessels by acting on hormone called angiotensin and protect your kidneys reducing your risk of stroke heart attack.
Diuretics are sometimes called "water pills". Their main goal is to help your body get of extra water and sodium through urine.
If you need to lower blood pressure, relax your heart and make it beat slower and less active, use Beta blockers. They also decrease the risk of heart attack and prevent stroke.
Calcium channel blockers help to keep calcium out of your blood vessels and heart and in this way make your blood vessels relax.
