Certain types of mental conditions can be treated by this medication. Loxapine blocks certain chemicals in the brain, which are involved with the sensitivity of nervous system and positively affects concentration and self control.
If stomach upset occurs, take this medication with food or milk, unless your doctor directs otherwise. Measure carefully the liquid concentrate and mix Loxitane with water, milk, juice, or carbonated beverage (4 ounces or more). You can put it into applesauce or pudding. Do not adulterate with coffee, tea, or colas – effectiveness of the medication Loxitane can be lost. Take right after diluting. Take Loxitane according to your prescription. Stop taking this drug suddenly only if after consulting your doctor. Sudden stop of medication usage may worsen some conditions. Sometimes, it takes up to two weeks to notice the full effects of this drug.
Loxitane is a tricyclic antipsychotic. Loxapine is an anti psychotic drug of intermediate-potency, which is used to treat disorganized and psychotic thinking, and also to help treat false perceptions ( e.g. hallucinations or delusions ).
In case a dose of Loxapine is missed, you should take it as soon as you remember; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, you should skip the missed dose and get back to your usual dosage schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose in order to catch up.
Loxitane should be stored at a room temperature. Keep Loxapine away from sunlight and moisture. Avoid temperatures below freezing.
Loxitane Safety information
This medicine should not be shared with others for whom it was not prescribed. It shouldn’t be used for other health conditions.
Please alert your doctor about your medical history, especially of: epilepsy, depression, Parkinson's disease, glaucoma, prostate trouble or difficulty to urinate, alcohol and substance abuse history. Be careful performing tasks which require alertness. Loxitane can increase sunlight sensitivity. Avoid being in the sun for a long time and apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing if needed. Alcohol intake should be limited, because it may intensify the drowsiness effect of this drug. Sweating can be reduced by this medication, making you more predisposed to heat stroke. Strenuous work or exercise should be avoided in hot weather. Redness and irritation of the skin can be caused by the oral concentrate form. Use caution not to spill it on your skin or clothes. Loxitane should be used only in case of direct need during pregnancy. The risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor. It is not known whether Loxitane is excreted into breast milk. Before breast-feeding you should consult your doctor.
If this medicine will be taken for an extended period of time, make sure to obtain all the necessary refills before your supply runs out.
Loxitane Side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision can be caused by Loxitane. Among other side effects of Loxitane are stomach upset, headache, drooling, loss of appetite, dry mouth, sleep disturbances or restlessness.
If these effects don’t stop worsen, let your doctor know promptly. It is not likely, but if you develop chest pain, a rapid heart rate, difficult or fast breathing, aching muscles and joints, rash, tremors, involuntary movements (such as chewing, puckering or a twitching tongue), please notify your doctor. If you notice any other side effects not listed above, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.
